Leveraging Connection - Will it Backfire?

I will be having my first interview with IBD (myself is from a non-finance background). I have received some general advice that during interview I should try demonstrate I know someone who can bring in deals/connected to a political exposed person.

Is this true or will this backfire on me? If I tell the interviewer that my family has a friend who work as financial regulator. Would this raise a red flag for possible compliance issue? or simply make me look stupid and naive.

Thanks.
