London vs Paris - Investment Banking

Hi folks,

I'm currently completing my end-of-studies internship in Investment Banking at an EB in Paris.

As I'm looking for FT opportunities both in Paris and London, what would you advise and what are the pros and cons for each city ?

I have assembled a few thoughts that are detailed below

Paris

  • Better WLB (more vacation, more time for lunch, less stressful)
  • Lower cost of living than in London
  • Same compensation as in London
  • Growing importance as a financial place since Brexit

London

  • International environment
  • More exposure to global large cap deals
  • Diverse teams

Feel free to share your thoughts

Thank you

Hello. I'm a VP at a BB investment bank. I was born and raised in Paris but have been working/living in London for the past 7 years now.

First of all, I wouldn't worry about work/life balance too tough for now - you will work long hours as a analyst/associate regardless of the city you are in.

In my opinion, London is 100% the place you want to start your career. Regardless of Brexit or what people say, it still is a financial hub and gives you more credibility (in your resume) than Paris. If in a few years you decide to move jobs, that's an advantage over Paris.

London also offers you more networking opportunities than Paris, which I believe is critical when you start your career.

Lastly, London is more diverse and multicultural, and just a fun place to start you career. Paris is a great place to go when you want to settle down and grow your family, but as a junior in IB, I wouldn't really recommend.

People in Paris love it though, don't get me wrong. They usually get paid more as well. But if you want my opinion, stick to London.
