Depends on the firm. At Lazard, for example, you have an industry focus, whereas at Morgan Stanley you're a generalist.
Seconded, at some firms (some BBs and some boutiques), you will primarily work in 1 or 2 industries, and only very rarely get staffed for a quick assignment or to help out in another industry. At other BBs and boutiques, you will be a generalist, meaning you won't a specific industry or 2, but rather, as assignments come up you and the rest of the analysts are staffed on these projects based on the current workload of each teammate regardless of the industry the project falls under.
