Is an MBA always needed to become an associate? Is it infinitely harder to become an associate at a bulge bracket (or even a sizable middle market) without an MBA?

There are direct promotes and laterals
It's the typical path, but its not always necessary. I've known analysts get signed on for a third year and then become associates their 4th.
