Mid office role?

Hi, i have got an offer at a bank for product control/ valuation intern (EU). My long term goals are to get into IB or AM and i was wondering if a mid office role on my CV will impact negatively my hiring for the front end? My reasons for considering this role: 1. brand name 2. I don't wanna sit idle while i do my thesis.

I would appreciate a response, thanks a lot!

Having experience never hurts more than not having experience. I don't see why having some experience in finance, even if it isn't your future destination, would hurt your future prospects?

I mean look, I'm not a hiring manager, but I'd rather interview you for an Investment Banking internship/graduate position over a random Big4 consultant who knows nothing about finance.

Hey, thanks a lot for the quick reply. I am just worried how will i add the role to my story? How will i answer why did i go mid office?

My opinion Is every job does teach you some qualitative skills which i could talk about in the interview but I don’t wanna sound like i am bullshitting in front of the interviewer.

I’m in a similar position. Will not name drop the firm but I’m playing it safe and took my BO offer. You can always renege for a better one - in this market it’s every man for himself. Firms never cares about you, so better care for yourself first.

I'd agree with the earlier post suggesting to accept the offer, and your rationale makes sense.

As for story and positioning, I'd suggest two things:

1) Comment that you weren't familiar with IBD going into the application season but wanted some kind of professional experience in finance. During your internship, you did a lot of networking, meeting and learning from investment bankers and finding the role fascinating. Having learnt from that, you decided to pursue a role in IBD. No one is going to hold this against you - not everyone's parents are bankers and lawyers - and the networking and hustle shows the right skill set; or

2) Just tell the truth - you didn't get an offer in IBD (maybe you applied too late as you weren't familiar with the hiring cycle), but thought it would be sensible to get some experience in finance anyway and network your way around. This shows some maturity and self-awareness.

Good luck!
