MM PE vs Mercer vs A&M Sophomore summer internship

Hi everyone,

I have 3 offers for a sophomore internship that I am debating on. As background, I want to recruit for both IB and consulting, so I’m looking for an internship that sort of overlaps between the two industries. I am looking for the internship that will best set me up for junior year recruiting for IB and consulting.

MM PE: Pros - interesting work - both consulting and ib related - best pay Cons - smaller name (2.7 bil in assets idk if that’s good or not) - In NY (I like NY but all my friends are going to Chicago so I wanted to work there but it’s not that important)

Mercer: Pros - decently big name in consulting - in Chicago - also somewhat interesting work Cons - HR consulting idk if that looks good for IB - Worst pay (still good so not that big of a deal)

A&M Pros - big name in consulting and IB with restructuring - probably the most interesting work - decent pay Cons - working remote - not sure if I will get involved with the project as much as an intern - does it overlap with IB enough?

Sorry for the long post but I’d appreciate any insight on anything!

These are pretty diverse opportunities, I would recommend you do whatever seems most interesting for you. Sophomore summer is a great time to try something out that you think may be interesting.

If you are hellbent on making sure you look good for IB/consulting recruiting I would take A&M or MM PE. If you want to do restructuring IB or consulting then definitely A&M. if you think you want to exit IB to PE, MM PE will be a great way to get into the industry and PE work is very similar to banking on a junior level.

The best advice I can give is to talk with whoever is leading the internship program at each firm and find out what kind of work you will be doing at each, then pick the internship with the most interesting/relevant work. Look for which internship looks like it will have the least busy work.
