Like someone else said, if its a bigger firm, might not be an issue, at a smaller firm, office politics could come into play. If an outside hire replaces him, he/she may look to bring their own people on board.
Why?
Are you at a BB or boutique? I think it will be different at a BB. Don't think people will care much about it. Most will just stick their heads in the sand and pretend like nothing happened.
At a boutique, I would assume the culture is more like a small town culture which could create problems for you.
