Needing advice
To start this post off I just want to say that I apologize as it seems that this topic is an annoyance (ie. freshman asking is my gpa to low?). A little background, I am not a freshman I have around 60 credits I just medically retired from the Army, I dropped out of college while studying counterintelligence, I started back at an online school while in Afghanistan, failed and dropped to a 1.9. Now that I am out I am using my GI bill to go to a non target school to major in finance and banking. I don’t start till this fall. I just need some advice as to how to start this grind. I haven’t even started school yet should I try getting an internship at a BB already or should I just focus on my school work and hope to swing a nice internship my junior or senior? Again sorry for the same post if it falls into that category.
Well - a great thing you have going for you is the fact that you are a veteran (BTW - thanks for your service). A lot of banks are interested in hiring veterans for the obvious reasons. There are sometimes programs that will group veterans into the type of accelerated recruiting that diversity candidates receive. You should go onto all the bank website and look for programs such as these.
If you are the equivalent of a sophomore I would say focus on school and networking (unless you can get into a sophomore diversity program). Then focus on junior year recruiting. Find something meaningful to do in the summer - classes (could be a good idea to boost the GPA) or do a local internship with PWM or something similar to get some experience on your resume from a finance perspective.
Also a vet and transferring basically allows you to start over. The low scores doing online overseas is reasonable. If they ever come up during an interview just say "I was going to school while I was deployed to Afghanistan, school fell down the list of priorities." Also congrats for finding the time, even in garrison it was next to impossible to go to school for me unless I were given a semester of no duty (I got a j term of sorts where we could pick two courses). You know how to work hard so do it. Save your partying for the end of semester or easy semesters. Always be a week ahead of the syllabus and perform knowing you are going to be expected to be a leader going forward. Also, when you transfer you should be starting with a fresh GPA. If you have the full three years of post 9-11 with 60 credits you should be able to double major - do it.
It was an honor to serve this country and the great people that make it up, even the ungrateful. Yes I do get all 3 years of my 9/11 however I am unsure about the whole starting over fresh, I think my credits from previous school goes to the school, if so, it just means I have to work harder no big deal. Now currently I do not start school until the fall, I have been accepted to the school and such. The only thing I’m currently doing is working, would it be absurd if I started networking and seeing about scoring an internship at a low level to get my foot in the door( or go big?)since I have free time?
