Networked this summer...what now?

So this summer between my freshman and sophomore years I networked with a lot of people from boutique IBs. Typical phone call or basic meetup. They all went well and a few of them said to check back around early 2013 to see if they would have any openings in the summer. I'm wondering what to do between then and now, I think I know how to send an email later asking about internship opportunities, but the "staying in touch" part is where I'm stuck. It has been a couple of months since I talked to most of them (early summer). What kind of correspondence right now would be appropriate to keep my name in the back of their minds? I don't want to send them a bullshit email asking some questions about "the current state of the industry" or "your opinion on this recent development" but if thats par for the course then I guess that's what I'll do...or should I wait a little later (sept/oct)?

Why don't you just say something like, "I hope you had a great summer. We spoke early in the summer and as the school year is starting again I wanted to reiterate my interest in working with you next summer. Please let me know the best way to follow-up.". My guess is that they don't remember they told you to follow-up in early 2013. I would send after Labor Day, this week is dead.
