Networking

I’m at T15 MBA program and considering IB Iinternship recruiting this fall through the university’s career office. Is it still necessary/advised to network (cold emails, LinkedIn, etc.) on my own with the bankers to increase the odds of an internship?

It’s basically required you do so. Career management centers can help but are not a job placement center, you still have to put in effort and time networking, goto the events that are school sponsored, set up coffee chats, etc. Yes you are T15, but so are a thousand other candidates recruiting for the same role you are. You may as well make the most of your position and put forth the effort to ensure you secure what you want

Thanks for your comment…I should clarify - what I meant was networking on my own outside of the events that are set up by the career office and the investment club….do I need to go on LinkedIn and find bankers and reach out to them for coffee chats, search in my school’s directory and reach out that way, etc ….

I’d still highly recommend it, it doesn’t hurt at all especially if you have a “strong” connection with them. I was lucky enough to get my position without networking but I believe im the exception and not the norm.

Attending the sponsored events + networking outside of purely the school should definitely set you up well

appreciate it...any tips on how to approach networking outside of school...who should I target (analysts, associates, VPs), banks (BB, MM, EB), medium (LinkedIn, personal/company email (if available))...?

Since you’re MBA, I’d target associates/VPs. I’d really just suggest reaching out via LinkedIn or Email to alumni and others with similarities to you

Depends where you are. In Canada, I feel the culture around networking is slower than the US, but it’s catching up. Some people I know have been using this app called LunchME — it’s designed for casual lunch or coffee chats. Not super well-known yet but looks like a cool idea if you're into building local connections.
