Networking... are there jobs not on the career site?

Hello,

I've actually been networking with some close friends at a top IB (eg. GS/MS). From contacting them, they've actually mentioned that internally there are needs in the investment bank, which are not always posted to the site. On occasion, there are internal laterals which actually fill positions that are not on the career sites. They mentioned that on occasion, a manager may have a need or be considering taking on a new analyst and may hire you without even posting the need on the site. Is this accurate or have you experienced this at all?

Thanks.

100% accurate. often when posted to the career site the job's already been filled and the hiring manager is just doing it as its a HR requirement. source: ive gotten a job in this manner.

This sounds more like a public sector recruiting requirement (ie advertising a rule after it's filled for the appearance of fairness). Why would HR been time and money doing this in the private sector?
