How to network as a sophomore? (Originally Posted: 12/20/2012)
Hi everyone.
I am a sophomore. During the fall I went to several info sessions and got some contact information from some alums. I am just wondering what I should do now to network with them. Should I just send them emails asking about their daily work and experience? Or should I schedule a call with them?

Assuming you are near their office, I would ask if it would be possible to arrange an informational interview. That's ideal, some will want to grab lunch/coffee and some will have you over to the office to chat. Make sure to review your technicals and be able to ask insightful questions.
Where do you go to school?
Invest a a few hours a day for an entire week (more the better) searching through old WSO discussions on networking just to give yourself an idea of strategies and how people have found success in the past.
Email alumni and set up time to talk. Say "you want to learn more about the industry and (x firm)". If you can meet in person for coffee that's even better.

I am a sophomore at a semi target school interested in IB or S&T. We are target schools for several large firms, semi targets for a few others, and actively recruited by a few more. We have great opportunities at my university but we are by no means on the Ivy League level. I wish to work on Wall Street at a bulge bracket bank. I know this is not very feasible after my sophomore year so I want to network my way in at a boutique bank in any big city or do PWM in NYC then try to get into a front office position next summer at a bulge bracket. What is the most effective way to network with professionals and reach out to professionals that I do not know? I was recently told in a class not to connect with people on LinkedIn unless I know them personally or work closely with them. I thought that LinkedIn was a great way to network and that contacting people through this platform just seeking insight into their experiences was an okay thing to do if they are an alumni at your school. Please let me know what you think and if you have any advice for networking. Thank you.
Find the names of alumni who work at firms you're targeting and don't be afraid to cold email people, alumni or non-alumni.
Networking Question - Sophmore at target school (Originally Posted: 01/23/2013)
Hey guys,
I'm currently a sophomore at a target school and I have begun networking aggressively with alumni because I think it is better to get a head start. I think I would be more memorable if I started now rather than if I did it with all my peers 3 months before the deadline.
I have a few questions about people I have been networking with forwarding my resume and about my cover letter. At one bank, I have had 7 alumni offer to forward my resume to HR next year (most banks about 3-4), so would it be a wise decision to name all the people I networked with in my cover letter? Also, should I get all the people I networked with to forward my resume to HR (I get the feeling this would piss HR off since they would see my resume 7 times + my school's resume drop)?
My hope was simply to have a lot of the analysts/associates recognize my name and get me an interview.
