Networking less useful in the UK
Saw a post on here asking for advice breaking into London internships, few comments said that networking doesn't carry the same weight as it does in America. Thoughts on this?

Not much to say, it doesn't help for summer internships, bar a few firms here and there in which it helps get to HV or interview stage (very rare)

I'd doubt if it works in london tbh. Some banks do even have strict zero networking policy that they'd blacklist you if you attempt to do so
lmao getting blacklisted for networking is such bullshit. no bank would ever do that. the idea of a zero networking policy is perpetuated by lazy students to justify not networking. networking exists everywhere to some degree and there's always a chat to be had that can advance your interests at any given firm. that said, it can be less effective at some firms than others
JPM, CVP for example have zero networking policy lol and it's also well discussed on here.
And for other banks, referral for Citi 100% doesn't work, UBS also stated referral doesn't work either, Barclays also doesn't work, etc. Only GS that I know does have referral system but it can only increase the chance of your resume to be seen, but doesn't guarantee you Hirevue or Superday whatsoever. The system doesn't work like in the US where everyone networks to get interviews.
It will benefit you; it's just less overtly integrated into the recruiting pipeline than in the States.
Barely works, but I see posts here from time to time of people networking their way in. So it wouldn't hurt to try.
I've tried and it has very limited results in the UK at larger banks, even with the backing of a VP, ED and MD at various firms (some through warm outreach, some cold) I barely noticed a difference in hit rate when I did London SA recruiting last year. It could definitely be more advantageous at the grad/ lateral level though.
That’s crazy
