Networking: Phone call vs. in-person coffee chat
I'm in the middle of scheduling a call at a BB firm in preparation for a summer 2018 SA position in IB (I'm a sophomore now). The presumption was that it was going to be over the phone some time this week, but I'm going to be in New York City next week, beginning on May 11th, after my finals end. Could I ask if the Analyst would prefer to meet over coffee instead? I prefer meeting face-to-face: I find it's harder for me to make a connection over the phone.
In-person is better than phone is better than nothing.
Right - is it acceptable if I respond asking if she'd be able to meet next week over coffee in NYC, instead of this week over the phone?
give both options, "I attached my schedule of availability below, but if you would prefer to meet in person I'll be in NYC xyz days"
Try to get an in-person chat. Makes a huge difference.
Personally, I find in person is a lot better due to the ability to read someones body language - naturally, this is tough through the phone. Again, offer both and take what is returned - all networking helps.
Do Professionals Prefer To Chat On The Phone Rather Than in Person For Networking Purposes? (Originally Posted: 04/04/2017)
When I reach out for networking purposes, I always ask if they have a few minutes to chat, in person or over the phone. I'm just starting to realize that 99% of the time, everyone that I try to network with will rather chat on the phone than in person.
Is meeting in person more impactful than talking on the phone and should I be more aggressive in trying to meet them in person? I always use to ask to talk in person (and never on the phone) and noticed I wasn't get that high of a response rate, so I changed my wording in my email to simply asking professionals if they have a few minutes to chat and left it to them to interpret it to meeting in person or talking on the phone.
