Networking Question - Have you done this before?

In an effort to expand my networking, I was thinking about reaching out to professors I had in the past. I am a senior, so most would be from this year and last year, has anyone tried this?

I’ve talked with a couple and ended up giving them my resume and they said they would let me know if they come across anyone or any opportunities.

I’m at a non-target, so most don’t have any IB connections, but it doesn’t hurt to find this out.

I was thinking about just sending individual emails saying I was in “X” class with them during “X” time period…bring up something beneficial from the course or something else to build rapport … tell them I want to work in investment banking long term … provide brief details on my experience … and ask if they know of anyone that would be good to talk with about this (I.E. hopefully their connections) …

I’m thinking I could also attach my resume for their review, also to show I have some experience so they might consider me as more of a serious candidate.

Anyone ever done this? If so, any pointers?

You're doing it right. Do not expect them to actually be of a real help though but its always good to try. Remember to follow up in about 2 or 3 weeks if your professors don't get back to you.

Profs are the best, but they will put in as much effort as you have. If you are graduating and ask for a job now after not speaking to them in a while they might not try so hard. If you have asked to help with projects, keep them updated on your life, ask about theirs etc. then they usually go the extra mile just like anyone else. And for the love of god, don't email them, show them your damn face. 99% more effective that way.

Very true about actually speaking with them instead of the email. I think I'll figure out their office hours and just plan on stopping by and speaking with them in person.

Professors are a very under used resource for networking. I agree with above, you need to put in a lot of effort. Make sure you are keeping in touch, ask to meet for lunch/coffee/etc. It also helps if you know the Professor has a good relationship with you. Some random Professor that you never spoke to won't remember you and most likely won't help you out.
