Not selling yourself in a coffee chat?
I had a coffee chat earlier today and I'm not sure how to feel about it. Was with someone fairly important but they were quite busy....I panicked a little since they mentioned they wouldn't be able to spend a lot of time talking to me (I knew how I wanted to the conversation to go but that threw me off). Anyway, we talked but I feel like it wasn't enough to establish a strong personal connection or a strong professional one. Heard about his experiences (he was very nice) and he gave me some generic advice and offered to connect me with someone. He also offered/I proposed we talk later down the line as well (when applications open up) and he was receptive to that. Is that alright for a coffee chat? I'm kind of new to this but I didn't talk about myself or my grades, interest in IB, or anything other than a little bit of basic background on myself. If anyone has tips for improvement I'd appreciate that as I have a few more calls coming up.
Sounds like it went exactly as you say. He was busy but went well overall. Still focus on building personal relationships.
I guess I'm trying to gauge if this was an effective interaction. Am I better off after this interaction (a VP) if they've offered to refer me to someone on their team, or is there something more they could have done (or even that I could have done)?
