Stupid question... but I'm submitting applications on my school's career website for SA positions, and it seems that for many firms, there is no option of uploading and submitting the cover letter as a separate file. Do I just submit the resume? Or should I combine the cover letter and resume into one doc file? Thanks.

i don't think you should do that. Some firms just want a resume with no cover letter--at least that's how it is in my school. If they ask for just a resume it would be stupid to put a cover letter combined w/ your resume.
Besides: 98% of firms don't give a crap about the CL.
they don't care about your CL and your resume will get looked at for 45 seconds, GL
Cover Letters matter very little if at all in banking.
If they ask you to submit only a resume and you submit your cover letter in the same doc, you will look stupid.
