Patents vs. Business

If I own a provisional patent, (because it's costly as hell to shoot the $10k required to push it as a full on patent) in tech/digital distribution/networking systems and I have the application receipt and what not -- can I still claim my bid to it on applications two years from now, even though it will expire in validity within a year?

I am intent on the Wharton Finance path and the whole Financial Engineering/Accounting/Nuclear Physics/Psychology shabono. I'm not sure if it's relevant though.
