PE or M&A ?
I am a Junior and have Internship opportunity with either a PE fund of fund (2.1 bn€)and M&A at a bank but top 15 not top 3-6
Which one would be the most profitable for the future ?
I was told that the PE fund would never hire me right after the internship, unlike the Bank where I should get a FT position if I perform well.
Also in terms of skills developped, modelling etc, in terms of future career which one would offer better opportunities ?
That depends. Where do you want to end up? What's your end game here?
If the bank is outside the top 10 then I'll do PE, its not even close. If its within the top 10, then I'll consider. which PE firm is this btw?
I wanna end up rich as soon as I can ! Thing is that I m in Europe, the bank is definitely out of top 10 in the US but would be top 10 in Europe
PE fund of fund is in Paris.
So again, what about FT offers in PE after an internship, would it hurt not to start with M&A in one's career ?
You're not doing PE exactly. You're doing a fund-of-fund which is completely different....I'd personally take banking over a PE fund-of-fund, the story would be different if it's PE direct.
Definitely take IBD over a PE FoF. No question.
Mmm ok please tell me the difference between fund of fund and PE fund ? and why the first one is less prestigious than the 2nd one ?
How do you have an internship offer if you don't even understand what the PE FoF does
I assume by "internship opportunity" he means he's applying for them. He hasn't stated anywhere in the thread that he has oustanding offers, probably just leads at this point. Try not to be so harsh w/o fully reading the post.
Got no offer, just interview invitation at both, so its logic I ask info no ? Instead of taking time to be harsh, what don't u spend the same amount of time to share a bit of your knowledge ?
Sorry jeedog. You're right, I shouldn't have been so harsh.
What I would do if I were you is think about what I want to do five-ten years from now. No matter which one you choose, as long as you get an internship and do well, you will probably get an offer and be working there for at least two years. Which of the two entry level positions do you think will put you in the best position for what you want to do later? Personally I think the M&A position will be relevant to any next step (PE, HF, Corp. Fin., etc.) in terms of the training and experience you will get at a BB. Try to keep in mind though, that you want to choose (i) a good bank, and (ii) a good group within that bank. If the M&A group isn't so hot relative to the PE FoF (do your research and use the right metrics - experience, deal flow, the people you'll be working with), maybe the FoF will prove to be a better choice.
That's just what my thought process would be. Best of luck.
