I think the article states that most of the job cuts have been in fields related to the mortgage industry where the subprime impact has been.

But the subprime trouble to some extent rippled through HFs, Prime Brokerage divisions, structured finance groups, etc. so it isn't really that hard to imagine layoffs potentially spreading as well if things don't improve.
