Potential internship offer and leverage
Hey guys - i'm in my final year of UG and have a potential internship offer in hand. There was an internship program from a MM offering placements such as Commercial banking, Risk Strat, and Marketing and such, but not IB in this bank. They asked us to write our preferences during the application process and I applied to this for my back up plan in case i didn't get IB - I placed Comm Banking 1st, and Risk 2nd.
Passed 1st round with HR, and went through second round with MD for Risk. Emailed HR before my interview whether my preference in Comm Banking is considered but she didn't reply. After interview, I heard back from HR in my voicemail saying she wanted to follow up with my interview... This was Friday and I didn't have time to get back to her but will do on Monday, but I think i MIGHT have the offer on hand since she's calling back and i don't think she'll follow up based on a rejection.
A little bit BG - final year non target. did internship in Bus Development before with a comp and looking to move into IB for this summer, but still in talks with some boutiques (interviewed with them but they're not sure whether they're looking still). I don't have any other offers on hand.
Now, I have a couple questions.
1) If I get an offer on Monday for Risk, how should I take it? Should I keep bugging about HR and ask for a placement in Comm Banking instead?
2) Should I still act interested in Risk (which obviously I"m not) and just stress that I want to take Comm Banking or should I tell them I'm totally not interested in risk and would prefer to be considered in Comm Banking
3) If the offer is in risk, Hey guys - i'm in my final year of UG and have a potential job offer in hand. 3) If the offer is in risk, do I go back with the firms I interviewed with or still talking to, and say that I have an offer in BANK A with X division? Or just stating the firm name is enough to get eyebrows raised?
4) Having a BD experience on hand, do you think taking this position will HURT ME and be considered a downgrade.... what about commercial banking?
- keep in mind that the MD went blunt on me and told me that there are a lot of previous interns/FT hires accepted the position with the perception of being able to lateral to other departments such as IB, or Corp Fin, and he said that... it will NOT be happening. And told me to definitely disregard that mentality and perception.
5) If have offer, do I go back with the firms I interviewed with or still talking to, and say that I have an offer in BANK A with X division? Or just stating the firm name is enough to get eyebrows raised?
6) I understand for the exploding offer process, you do it for firms that you are currently INTERVIEWING with, but what about firms that you haven't talked to yet? Do you still go to them and does going to HR suffice?
Any advice is appreciated - thanks
