pre MBA IB internship

Hi all.

I have been working as an engineer for a blue chip high-tech and will start my MBA (top 15, think NYU/Cornell/UMich/Duke) this fall with post-mba career goal in IB.

I have secured an unpaid summer IB pre-mba internship (~10 wks) at a decent boutique IB firm at NYC.

As you can imagine, opportunity cost is not small, (working for summer, sacrificing decent pay at my current workplace, etc.) but I guess having pre-mba summer IB internship under my belt could be quite helpful for IB recruiting.

I would like to know if it worth to take this position and the value of this opportunity.

TBH, I was bit disappointed as well.... they told me that they typically get undergrad interns and give them school credits not $ and they are willing to give me school credits if possible. But as you can imagine, school credits are worthless for mba... the firm seems to have >30 MDs thou...

The value of this internship can be seen in being able to build your story for why IB, begin building your network, and become accustomed with banker personalities / styles.

A few students did this before starting at my program (similar school to those you mentioned) and it helped them a bit for recruiting in the fall.

Just hope the internship has some flexibility, so you can still enjoy the summer before you start school.

thanks Presto...

I guess this could work as bit of lift but not a deal maker.

Yep... hope I can at least enjoy some nights and weekends at NYC during summer.

Are you doing a one year or two year MBA?

If it's a two year take anything at all you can get. Very few firms want to take you for a pre two-year MBA because you'd be using limited full time recruiting bandwidth. Unpaid with a small firm is a different story since you can be trusted do mundane tasks they don't want to...which is about all a pre-MBA intern is good for barring pre-MBA finance experience.
