Private Equity vs Sales & Trading

Please can the more experienced members here help me out.

I saw a post on private equity pay and it seemed a lot more then any other financial role.

I am now interested in Private Equity and want to read into it. Please could someone give me the basic rundown of what private and equity is. How does it differ to Sales & Trading?

Thanks.
