Not a recruiter but worked with plenty during lateraling.

Best candidates have one thing: they can tell a coherent story about why banking.

Technical skills are table stakes. Everyone can build a DCF.

What separates people:

  • Actually understanding the deals they talk about
  • Asking smart questions about the group/bank
  • Having real reasons for choosing banking beyond "prestige"

Most impressive thing? When someone can walk through market dynamics affecting their target sector. Shows they actually think about the business.

Least impressive? Generic "I love finance" BS everyone says.

Thanks I really appreicate the advice as I want to avoid those kind of traps that would set me behind in final interviews/group discussions. Would it be possible for me to schedule a chat or message you a bit more about your experience as that would be super helpful. Cheers

Few quick things to avoid in finals:

  • Don't just regurgitate what's on their website
  • Have 2-3 specific deals ready to discuss in detail (know the why, not just the what)
  • Ask about deal flow in their specific group, not generic culture questions
  • Show you understand their sector's current challenges

Most people bomb because they sound like every other candidate. Be specific about why you want their group at their bank.

Hope this helps, if you have any other questions PM me.
