Renege US BB CB for MM IB SA

London-based, was offered an offer in middle office in a Top 5 US BB after attending a diversity programme prior to when applications opened and accepted the offer.

However, I see myself in IB for various reasons so I continued to recruit for SA2024 and landed an offer in an MM shop. Is it worth reneging on the US BB for an MM IBD? I quite like the culture in the MM to be honest and see myself working full-time in the MM. I can't imagine taking the grad offer in the BB so I don't know if it's worth just doing the internship and rejecting the grad offer. (That means I have to do a Masters to be a penultimate student again). I don't know if it's worth being blacklisted by the US BB for an MM offer?

If I renege, should I renege after or before the MM background check? The US BB is in my CV as a diversity programme/work experience as in the UK we usually include these types of spring/insight programmes in our CV.

Thanks in advance, have been losing sleep over this.

Top 5 US BB? Last time I counted there were only 5 US BBs so saying "Top 5 US BB" is the same as saying "Lower 5 US BB".

Anyway, how is this even a question? Of course, you should renege on the middle office role if that's not what you want to do.

I am not saying BO or MO is "bad". There are plenty of people who want to work in such functions and I respect that. But if you want to do IB, BB MO has no value to you whatsoever. Are you that desperate to have the BB name on your CV? That is crazy

You're right, was gonna put top 3 US BB but didn't want to reveal too much so changed it lol.

I would accept the grad offer at the MM if given the chance to convert, but I evidently didn't have much to include in my CV so had to include by BB diversity programme as a one/two-liner in my CV. Just don't want to be blacklisted and have both offers taken away if the MM finds out, don't really want to stay at the BB for my summer.

MM return rates are quite high (usually). Also, you could do some off-cycle internships in H2 '24 and H1 '25 which you could renege if MM offers you to start right away. While the official requirement is that you are a penultimate student, you'll find countless examples where SA already graduated. So don't worry about this.

I'll leave the part about the renege to someone else, how one should approach the timeline etc.
