reneging full time offer due to health?

Hi all,I did a summer 2022 internship at a large Investment bank (jpm/bofa/barclays/citi), got the return, and signed to return full time in August. However this December I have been going through some personal health issues (mental and physical) and now I am considering staying close to my medical team + support system (friends, family,gf all in SF), which are not in NYC. I am working on my status and thankfully it's nothing terminal or chronic, but NYC would not be good for me physically or mentally at this point of my recovery. If I renege the offer (it's been like 5 months since I signed it), would it be ok? Since it's due to truly personal reasons and not some BS like trading up in name prestige. I might still try and find a job close to home in finance, but this wouldn’t get back to me and harm my rep in any way right? Thanks bros

Sorry to hear about this but I'm in the same boat as you literally so I totally get it and makes sense. Interned at one of the top 3 BBs 2022 summer and received a return offer for the west coast. At first, I thought it would be cool to see the west coast for a bit. However, I'm from nyc and it's hard for me to relocate given my recent personal and family situation. Asked hr about switching to offices and they couldn't accommodate due to no availability in other. offices this late in the process.

Am currently recruiting for jobs closer to home and will renege on the bb offer as no job is worth sacrificing my happiness / family / health over imo.

As far as I know, no large bank really cares about an incoming analyst reneging given that you are one of hundreds of analysts and are very replaceable so wouldn't worry too much about that. Plus your reasoning is completely justified imo.

Best of luck with everything

Yes dude it’s 100% okay, cmon. This should be a no brainer. I’m so sorry to hear about that, but yes, you have the right idea.

This industry is so fucked.
