Renewables learning material

Started IB AN1 stint and am the sole analyst. Working primarily on renewables, and a bit of other PF infra stuff, but mostly renewables.

Is there any structured way of learning about renewables finance? This industry is super technical and I can’t find any structured sources that can teach me.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some structured resources and recommendations to get up to speed on renewables finance:

  1. Enverus Knowledge Hub: Check out the Power & Renewables section. They offer webinars and research, such as the "IRA, Energy Transition Research, 2023 P & R Outlook" webinar (first 24 minutes are particularly useful).

  2. SEIA (Solar Energy Industries Association): Their Solar Market Insight Report (Executive Summary) is a great starting point for understanding the solar market.

  3. Mercom Capital and Zpryme Reports: These provide insights into the clean energy and battery storage business landscape. For example:

    • Mercom Capital: Clean energy reports.
    • Zpryme: U.S. battery project and capacity trends.
  4. U.S. Department of Energy Reports: The Battery Storage Valuation report (pages 7-15 and 28-29) is particularly useful for understanding valuation in the battery storage sector.

  5. Wood Mackenzie and Clean Power Resources:

    • Wood Mackenzie: Articles like "Decoding the Hydrogen Rainbow" and webinars such as "Perspectives on The New Green Hydrogen Landscape."
    • Clean Power: Reports on renewable energy trends and developments.
  6. Case Studies and Industry Moves: Familiarize yourself with recent deals and trends in the renewables space:

    • BP acquiring Archea and NextEra purchasing RNG assets.
    • Brookfield acquiring Scout Clean Energy, and investments by Carlyle, KKR, Apollo, and others in renewable developers.
  7. WSO Financial Modeling Courses: If you're looking for technical skills, the WSO Elite Modeling Package includes courses on Excel, DCF, M&A, LBO, and more. These are foundational for renewables finance modeling.

  8. Private Equity and Infrastructure Finance Basics: The Renewable Energy PE Overview on WSO explains the structured finance approach in renewables, including concepts like "back-levered" deals and tax equity investors.

By combining these resources, you can build a solid foundation in renewables finance while also gaining technical skills for your role.
