Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a corporate banking (CB) offer to an investment banking (IB) full-time role in New York or Chicago is challenging but feasible with the right approach. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Networking is Key: Start reaching out to alumni, professionals, and recruiters in IB roles at your target firms. Building relationships through coffee chats, informational interviews, and networking events can help you get noticed.

  2. Leverage Your Current Offer: Having a CB offer from a BB in Chicago is a strong starting point. Highlight the transferable skills and experience you’ll gain in CB, such as financial analysis, client interaction, and deal exposure, which are relevant to IB.

  3. Target Off-Cycle Opportunities: Many IB firms have off-cycle hiring processes. Keep an eye on these openings and be prepared to apply quickly. Off-cycle roles often have less competition compared to on-cycle recruiting.

  4. Be Flexible with Location: While you prefer New York or Chicago, being open to other locations could increase your chances of breaking into IB. Once you’re in, lateral moves to your preferred city are more manageable.

  5. Prepare for Interviews: Ensure you’re well-prepared for technical and behavioral interviews. Use resources like WSO’s financial modeling courses and interview prep guides to sharpen your skills.

  6. Persistence Pays Off: Transitioning from CB to IB may take time and effort, but it’s achievable. Stay persistent, and don’t hesitate to reapply or explore lateral opportunities if needed.

If you’re proactive and strategic, you can successfully make the move to IB. Good luck!
