Restructuring and Jurisdiction (ability to relocate)

Hi,

I have a question regarding restructuring and hope that somebody is able to help me out.

It is easy to move from country to country doing M&A since the skillset is the same. At least how I understand it.

Understanding the legal context is a big part in restructuring. Since the legal context differs according to country is it the case that one will be having problems to relocate?

Has anybody made experience with people moving from city to city doing restructuring or am i correct that one is somewhat more limited in choice?

Easier at the junior level, but so much of investment banking is based on your network and reputation, that moving around is not likely to be a positive at a senior level. The city you are in will not have much impact on the legal aspects, as most US companies will be delaware incorporated anyway. The country will matter, as can be seen by the current dispute between English and US courts over Lehman's obligations, and while that will be more of an issue for the lawyers than bankers, it will still affect your work, and thus there will be a learning curve if you switch

For restructuring, moving city to city in the US should not be a problem. Chapter 11s can be filed all over the place and you will not necessarily be restricted by which US state you are based out of (although most restructuring practices in the US are based out of NYC). I do not know how difficult moving countries would be, but on the banking side you don't deal with the legal elements a ton. As such, I would think the switch would be possible.

Thanks for the answers, I really appreciate it.

My question is especially concerned regarding the move between countries. Does somebody have experience about people moving e.g. between London and NY or Germany to UK/US etc.?

I have the opportunity to join the restructuring practice of a BIG 4 company in a continental European country. This possibility came up quite surprisingly. I feel confident regarding the work itself but less regarding career development.

Since I already have a thread open I think I use it to ask another question.

Do you think big 4 is a good place to start if one aims at making a career in reustructuring? I could also try for some bigger names in restructuring or some BB IBD departments (all London and Rest Europe). I think I might have a chance. On the other hand I would have to decline my big 4 offer.

I understand that big 4 (TS etc.) is not the perfect spot to start if one wants to do M&A but what about restructuring? Is big 4 restructuring viewed as very "2nd class"? Or is it a not as prestigious but a decent starting point?
