Resume Advice! Interesting twist to corporate internship!

So here is my current situation:

Currently going into my junior year at a target/semi-tartget public school and going after a BB SA position next summer. I landed an offer at a F100 company in their strategy department for the summer, but halfway through the summer, I networked and was able to work the 2nd half of the day in the M&A group. So now I am working my normal 8 hours starting early morning in the strategy department then switching to the M&A group from around 3-8PM at night.

My question is how should I portray this on my resume? Should I just write that I was a Summer M&A Analyst, or should I say I was a Summer M&A Analyst / Summer Strategy Analyst?

I am leaning towards putting both positions on my resume because it will give me a good story as to why Banking and also show my hard work ethic (switching from working 8 hours a day to 12+ because I wanted to learn more about M&A).

I would definitely list both positions, as in:

COMPANY NAME (Bold) Corporate Strategy Summer Analyst (Italics) o Bullet point o Bullet point Internal M&A Summer Analyst (Italics) o Bullet point o Bullet point

Now this MAY come off as confusing to some people, so you can mitigate that to some extent by providing specific dates for each position (even with the overlap).

-OR-

COMPANY NAME (Bold) Summer Analyst (Italics) o Bullet point (describing how you operated almost as a rotational analyst, supporting strategy and M&A) o Corporate Strategy - Bullet point - Bullet point o Mergers & Acquisitions - Bullet point - Bullet point

Its probably something you want to play around with format-wise to see what looks good, but the most important thing is try to make the fact that you worked in strategy AND M&A very noticeable at first glance. If you are going for IBD then this will be huge for you to specify clearly.

hello84Close to what I was thinking. Here is my setup now:

COMPANY NAME (Bold) Localtion (Bold, all the way on the right side) Position one (Italics) May 2012 - August 2012 (Italics) Bullet Bullet Position two (Italics) Bullet Bullet

Look good? Does it seem weird/confusing in any way? Like how I just listed the date for just one of the positions?

I just have a feeling with that set up (2 different position titles, only time period listed and its only listed next to one position) you are going to get a "wait a second, so were you an X intern or Y intern?" and then you will have to explain it all which won't be a problem but its still an extra step... what you really want is for them to just look at it, be able to pick up on the situation without asking for clarification and then jump right into "so tell me about your experience at XYZ Inc"

I think you can accomplish that with the second format in my earlier post.

I was also thinking that when the time comes to talk about this experience in interviews, you can weave the M&A group experience into your "why I-Banking" story... but I wouldn't blatantly say you were brought in as a Strategy Summer Analyst and then you networked to try to move into the M&A group (people may assume you will try to jump from their group too if the hire you).

I would position it by saying "while working in strategy, we collaborated with the M&A group on a few projects and one of the senior M&A team members mentioned that they needed some extra man power for upcoming projects and both groups agreed that because I was willing to put in the extra hours it would be beneficial for all parties. This provided a great opportunity to support different areas of the firm and also led to exposure working with bankers, which solidified my interest in pursuing a career in investment banking."

This will help you (subtly) show off work ethic and how many hours you worked and also your willingness to help out wherever necessary. It seems like you're very bright and a good worker so you probably would have figured all of this out on your own anyway, and you may have a better strategy so this is just my .02

Here is my final suggestion, I have something similar going on with a past experience on my resume as well and I think it looks clean and easy to understand and you solve the problem regarding the employment dates.

COMPANY NAME (Bold) -> (far right side) Location Summer Analyst (Italics) -> (far right said) Dates o Describe how you operated as a "rotational analyst," supporting strategy and M&A o Corporate Strategy - Bullet point - Bullet point o Mergers & Acquisitions - Bullet point - Bullet point
