Resume Review - Break into IB

Please roast my resume. I recently moved to Big 4 valuations. I'm currently working on 1 project, but it's a decent one. I moved because i was barely getting hits with my independent val firm (but did make it to 2 boutique super days). Can i break in from big 4 vals? Or do i really need an MBA? Also rate my redaction skills

Breaking into investment banking from Big 4 valuations is absolutely possible, and many have done it successfully. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Big 4 Valuations as a Stepping Stone:

    • Big 4 valuations is a solid platform to transition into IB, especially if you’re working on high-profile projects or deals. Highlight your experience with financial modeling, valuation techniques, and any exposure to M&A or transaction advisory work.
    • If your current project is "decent," make sure to quantify its impact and your contributions. For example, mention deal size, industries involved, or specific valuation methodologies you’ve applied.
  2. Resume Tips:

    • Tailor your resume to emphasize IB-relevant skills. Use action verbs and focus on achievements rather than responsibilities.
    • Include technical skills like DCF, LBO modeling, and precedent transactions. If you’ve used these in your current or past roles, make them prominent.
    • If you’ve had boutique super days, that’s a great sign. Highlight any feedback or lessons learned from those experiences to show growth and readiness.
  3. Networking:

    • Networking is critical. Leverage LinkedIn, alumni networks, and WSO forums to connect with bankers. Informational interviews can open doors and help you bypass the traditional application process.
    • Attend industry events or webinars to meet professionals in the field.
  4. MBA Consideration:

    • An MBA can be a helpful reset button, especially if you’re targeting top-tier IB roles and feel your current trajectory isn’t yielding results. However, it’s not always necessary.
    • If you’re already getting some traction (e.g., boutique super days), you might not need an MBA. Focus on building your deal experience and networking instead.
  5. Redaction Skills:

    • If you’re asking for a resume roast, ensure all sensitive information (e.g., names, client details, and proprietary data) is properly redacted. Use consistent formatting and avoid leaving any identifiable details visible.

Next Steps:
- Polish your resume with IB-specific language and metrics.
- Continue building your valuation expertise and seek out projects with M&A exposure.
- Double down on networking to increase your chances of breaking in without an MBA.

If you’d like a more detailed resume critique, consider sharing a redacted version on WSO forums for targeted feedback!
