Retail banking exit ops

Hey everyone, I’ve recently accepted an offer to join a top European bank as a customer care advisor at a branch local to me after university (studied geography).

My long term aim is to exit to a private equity firm or a hedge fund as I know these are the typical exits from banking. I’ll also be studying for a CISI qualification on the side so wondering if this holds any value in the aforementioned industries whatsoever.

I’d also love any tips for networking as I haven’t had much luck in responses from analysts and associates.

Thanks

Hey there! Transitioning from retail banking to private equity or hedge funds can be quite a leap, but it's not impossible. Here are some tips and insights based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Upskill and Certify: While a CISI qualification is a good start, consider also pursuing the CFA or an MBA from a top school, as these are more recognized in the investment world.

  2. Networking: This is key. Use LinkedIn to connect with alumni from your university who work in the industry. Engage in forums like Wall Street Oasis to learn from others' experiences and possibly connect with mentors.

  3. Leverage Your Current Role: Excel in your retail banking role and seek to understand the financial products and services deeply. This knowledge can be a stepping stone to more complex financial roles.

  4. Seek Internal Opportunities: Look for opportunities within your current bank that are closer to corporate finance or investment roles. Internal transfers can sometimes be easier than external moves.

  5. Build a Narrative: Be ready to explain your transition from geography to finance and how your skills are transferable. Storytelling is a powerful tool in interviews and networking conversations.

  6. Prepare for Interviews: If you manage to land interviews with PE firms or hedge funds, be prepared to discuss not only your experience and qualifications but also your passion for the industry and your investment philosophy.

  7. Networking Tips: Based on the WSO Networking Guide, remember to follow up frequently, show genuine interest, and seek mentors, not just contacts. These relationships can be crucial in learning about and preparing for opportunities in your target fields.

Remember, while retail banking to PE or hedge funds is not the most traditional path, with the right strategy and persistence, you can make it happen. Keep learning, networking, and be ready to seize opportunities when they come. Good luck!
