SA 2011 Interviews
I recently finished a large batch of applications for summer positions, and am curious how long it would take to hear back from banks about interviews, if any of them are interested.
I'm rather anxious because I've no idea what sort of odds I'm facing as a non-target, non-finance, no network, with strong academics, leadership, and prior work experience.
Any input on how long it may take to hear back?
depends, are you in the US? if you're in Can, interviews have already started. it would also help if you let us know which firms you applied to.
Outside the UK, without connections or network your chances are very slim
@IBBanker
I'm in the U.S. So far as firms are concerned: GS, UBS, JPM, Barclays, DB, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, Greenhill, Centerview Partners. I plan on applying to more... I'm definitely open to suggestions for particular firms that have less competitive summer internship programs.
I hope you're in an ivy, Centerview doesn't recruit for SA at non-targets. I've also heard rumors that Greenhill had already extended all offers.
I'm at a non-target and have applied to almost the exact same banks plus some others. I have heard back from about half of them either to schedule phone interviews, and I haven't heard from the rest. Like derivs said, being a non-target, non-finance and having no networking is probably going to hurt you a little. I had a contact that I had made through networking at almost every bank I applied with, and sometimes that's still not even enough. Good luck.
It sounds like not networking means a near zero chance of a summer job. Is it too late to start searching for alum in these organizations that might boost my odds of landing a summer position?
If the apps are still open then I don't think it's too late for this summer.
I think the closer you cut building the network relationship to the actual app date you are in for, the slimmer your chances of it working. I doubt people are going to want to meet a fresh grad and do him/her a favour within the same week.
ps did you play sega 16-bit?
@GotBushels
You're point on networking relationships taking time is well taken. I know that the deadline for some of the apps is still far off, e.g. March for UBS. Hopefully the March deadline will be enough time, even if its too late for other apps.
P.S. I did play a bit of sega 16 bit back in the day. Was also a huge fan of the SNES. Sadly, only my SNES still works.
Going thorough Canadian IB interviews this week. GL every1
You should also look into the summer programmes of Nomura and BofAML.
