If you are interning at a BB this summer and assuming that you perform well, you might be invited to accelerated FT recruiting events at other BBs. They usually happen anywhere between August and September. I have a friend who did the SEO program at a BB (I think you are in the same boat this summer), and got invited to several accelerated FT recruiting events. Unfortunately, he didn't get an offer from his SEO partner bank. But, he did get an offer from one of the banks where he went for an early FT interview.

all you get is just an offer, and the group placement process (which varies from one bank to another) is the same. It's all the same, just that you have interviews and offers early on.

I think it depends on the bank, because some banks only give out or used to give out desk specific offers. If they don't, then you have a sell day where bankers from different groups come and meet you and if they are interested in you and you are interested in them then you end up joining that group.
