Sales-Related Jobs in Finance
Hello - long time lurker here!
I am a senior from non-target who is graduating in January and starting FT IB analyst gig at NY BB in early winter. I am grateful to have made it this far as a non-target, but to be honest I didn’t really love my SA experience and only accepted the FT job because job security.
I’ve come to realize that as much as I say I’m an analytical person and a numbers whiz in my banking interviews and conversations, I’d much rather focus on people and building relationships via sales.
- Obviously, I understand there’s a people and business development component in IB, but I feel as though I’m better suited for sales jobs.
- I also understand that most corporate finance jobs have analytical components that can never be avoided. I just want to be in a position where the primary function of my work is building relationships with clients and generating sales leads.
A lot of my friends/mentors have recommended:
- wealth management/being an FA (which gets so much shit on here)
- investment management
- institutional equity sales (or S&T - I mean I guess "S")
- commercial real estate
- workin in MC
- working in commercial banking (which eventually progresses to a relationship manager level)
- however, the same logic can be applied to staying in IB
- MD tends to focus on sales, rather than massaging the numbers as a junior hehe
- however, the same logic can be applied to staying in IB
To be direct now, my question is:
What are some fields within "high finance" that emphasize and demand HEAVY sales and client-facing skills/exposure at an entry-level or early career level?
Anything helps. Thanks!
tbh MDs, for the most part, do sales. and acting like an MD doesn't start at the MD level but at the SVP/D level.
I would think Corp Banking would be a natural alternative. Become a partner to the financial organization of major companies, facilitating capital access.
That way you get to use your finance knowledge base and move in to a relationship management role. I mention "Corp" vs. Commercial as you'll work with larger clients and, in many banks, be connected to the IB team so still involved in deals. Early career will involve a lot of credit based training but after a few yrs you'll reach a "Y" and have to decide between Relationship Management and Portfolio Management roles. You sound like you'd be a great candidate for the RM role. That position, although not as lucrative as IB, is still a money maker and many see it as a career path, not a stepping stone to greener pastures. Fewer roles because far fewer leave. That should tell you something.
