Scrappy firms

Bear Stearns used to have a reputation as being one of the scrappiest firms on the street, with the nickname "Street fighters" according to the book on the last 72 hrs of BSC.

Who is the new scrappiest firm on Wall Street? Where do all the poor, smart, and hungry kids go? Are there any places that have a reputation for ignoring pedigree?

It's just different now. I feel like the terms "poor, smart, and hungry" existed in a time when not every smart kid groomed themselves from frehman year to be the ideal banking candidate (see many of the posts here regarding what classes to take, what ec's etc.) There really are no more "diamond in the rough" kids.
