I think its fine as long as you use common sense. Often on applications there is a pull down that will only let you select tenths places: 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 4.0

In this case you are forced to round. Just round based on what you learned in third grade math: Look at the hundredths place if it is 5 or greater round up if it is 4 or less round down. Problem solved. 3.45 ---> 3.5 3.44 ---> 3.4

Any other rounding is stupid and you can't explain it logically. Don't really understand how M&I recommends rounding a 3.42 --> 3.5 but whatever, thats what they say.

Agreed. I personally can't believe the type of crap that kids are trying to get away with these days. I was just reading a post where some ass-hat was trying to round his 3.25 to a 3.5 somehow...

Unbelievable.

Money Never Sleeps? More like Money Never SUCKS amirite?!?!?!?

Well, it's halfway between 3.0 and 3.5, so of course he should round up to a 3.5. Duh.
