Should I Lateral
I'm a senior associate at an EB firm in a sweaty group. Definitely don't want to do finance long term but could see myself doing 1-2 years as a VP before bouncing.
I like the people and have a strong reputation within the group, but have been wondering if I should lateral to a GS / MS / JPM for a year or 2 before leaving to have the brand name give me more optionality. Thinking small startup or something more entrepreneurial.
Wanted to get some thoughts on if I should stay put or if the brand name is really worth sacrificing on comp in the meantime.
It’s not a bad idea. 99% of people outside finance have never heard about Moelis or Evercore, but when you tell them that you work at JP Morgan or at Goldman Sachs they may get really impressed.
Probably not the worst idea but you’ll obviously be giving up goodwill and comp. How are your hours now?
Yeah I don’t want to fall into a grass is greener trap here. The goodwill is huge and it’s such a shot in the dark starting at a new firm and I think personality fit drives a lot of your perceived performance as well.
Hours are bad. Among the worst on the street.
