Should we be worried about layoffs?

I am at a strong MM in a good group. We’ve had a decent year but still 50% down from last year. I haven’t heard anything regarding layoffs but it makes me wonder if I’m being too naive. Should we all be keeping an eye out for job postings and taking recruiter calls in times like these?

I think it's good practice to do market checks, especially in uncertain times like now. I generally do this once a year, see what's out there and what my options are. Even in good times.

Hard to tell where we will be re: layoffs, really because there is so much uncertainty and mixed signals on the macro side. Think it will be firm specific unless things blow up. Some of my friends at other firms have nothing to do, others like me are getting decimated.

Layoffs occur all the time. Sometimes it’s not in your power and even if you were a great analyst/associate, your group could be hit.

Remember, banks will drop you without a second thought. Do what’s best for you

Personally, less worried as you’re not going to be viewed in the same way as someone whose been there for over a year and management knows their overall abilities.
