Skipping Penultimate Year Summer Internship if looking to pursue a Masters
Hi, I hope you can help
I was wondering what the thoughts were with regards to skipping penultimate year summer internships if I can instead pursue one between my final year of undergrad and my master's, which I will need to apply for.
The reason for this is because of a family event during the summer next year and it is preferred that I am around, so not taking a summer internship and instead trying again the year after would be preferable. I've seen a similar thread but it seemed outdated (from around 2011).
Thank you in advance for your help
There's no guarantee the market in which you will be recruiting in will be favorable. It might be worse than the market in which you are skipping recruiting in, in which case you might very well end up with zero offers. I know many people who didn't secure anything 2021/22, went for a target masters, just to end up with nothing.
Ah ok thank you. I guess it's a risk I'm willing to take, and I've got some connections over LinkedIn which I may be able to wiggle something out of if I absolutely need to.
Are you from the UK? Referrals don't go very far unless they're by an Executive Director... And I wouldn't expect a referral anyway unless you're close (family friend etc). Networking in the UK with others/randoms generally is just to get an idea of the group, it's not something seen too favorably either if you just reach out after having been connected for ages out of no where asking for a referral. I really wouldn't skip the opportunity to recruit in the first cycle.
How long is the family event, anyway? Most firms give around 4 days or so of holiday to interns to take.
If looking to break into IB and can secure an internship for the penultimate year summer, this might mean you don't even need the masters
Ultimately, it's a career that requires a lot of sacrifices and one that might require missing an event like the one you describe. Are you graduating in 2024 or 2025?
Hi, I will be graduating in 2025, with the hope of doing a 1 year masters. I'm also looking to go into commodities, but as there is no thread for that and most people look for internships in IB, I thought I should post here. Sorry if I was wrong for doing that
Might be worth doing the applications and seeing how it goes, let the recruiters decide for you. At that point, you're somewhat doubling your chances if you can apply twice
This is very true. I had to miss my wife’s wedding, for example.
