Sleeping with people to get the job done - lesson about office politics

One of my female colleague is very bad at her job.

She takes no effort to improve.

She gets other guys to do the job for her by flirting with everone and sleeping with this one guy. We all have to manage projects. However she hasn't managed any project yet as she gets help from this guy, who she has wrapped around her little finger, to do it for her.

Her line manager doesn't care as long as the job is big done.

Whereas I work twice as hard and have done more work but my line manager expects me to do more. Because I asked for a little support to get the work done, I am under pressure now for needing help and have to self improve.

The moral of the story is it doesn't matter how hard you work or how you try and do things following correct procedures. All you have to focus on is just getting the job done any way possible with as little involvement from your line manager.

Massive wakeup call for me. At work I tried to do things following correct procedures and play things by the book. It let me down massively.

If I were you I would stop comparing myself to others right this instant, it has zero upside but by the look of things results in you being annoyed. That is energy that could be better spend elsewhere.

If she decides that this is how she wants to progress in the corporate world then that is her choice. It's cheesy to say but sooner or later she will run into situations that she cannot sleep her way out of, or equally likely, her reputation will spread and she will end up as an undesirable employee altogether.

That's not to say you can't play any office politics though. Have you tried hustling your line manager from time to time? You've probably left a good impression on him in terms of work ethic / dedication, which has resulted in him setting the bar high and thus putting you under pressure for seeking help - this doesn't have to be a bad sign.

Ultimately your line manager is going to be the one who (partially) decides your faith so there's nothing wrong with playing a little office politics yourself.
