Sophomore IB BB Internship- How to set myself apart as a candidate

What makes a competitive candidate for Sophomore BB summer analyst besides from the typical requirements for a junior SA position? Recruiting typically begins in the summer after freshman year, correct? So it is hard to distinguish candidates. I assume that being diversity and at a target is an immediate advantage, but what else? When do you recommend starting to network for these positions? Are the interviews overly technical? What is the ideal internship for after freshman year?
