Sophomore summer - What are the best and worst things to do?
Title. What's the best to do with your sophomore summer? Boutique/MM IB? CorpFin? FP&A? Anything buyside? I've been looking at internships for all of them but want to focus in on one and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.
what an utterly stupid question. best thing to do is to intern in the role or closest thing to it that u want full time.
And what if you live in New York City, am I supposed to apply to BB IB jobs because they are closest to what I want?
yeah, you do. and if you get rejected then you go to the next best thing. why are you asking people for confirmation for things you want to do?
If absolutely nothing works out do summer school in order to pick up a stem major/minor.
Search fund if you can't get a real PE internship or a boutique IB, or another buy-side position.
At my school (non-target Southeastern state flagship), the thing that has worked out the best is private equity during sophomore summer. We've had a few people do successfully also after doing asset management during their sophomore summer (we have two analysts at Goldman right now who did that their sophomore summer and didn't even have any other internships besides that). I'd imagine that boutique/MM IB would be very good, but these roles are hard to get as a sophomore.
I wouldn't discount CF roles either, but prioritize PE the most. Many corporations are unwilling to hire sophomore interns for CF anyway.
Also, with boutique/MM IB, make sure you're going for firms with good dealflow and that actually pay, not Tobin & Co. or anything like that.
