Sophomore Year
I'm in a bit of a spot and I wonder if any of you can help me out. I'm a sophomore at a non-target and have spent the past three months seeking out every possible internship opportunity available to me. I started out with BB, but didn't get interviews with any probably because i did all online submissions.
I then just sought any smaller sized firm or f500 that I could get my hands on. Hedge funds, boutiques, consulting firms, anything. Still nothing has panned out and most of these firms just won't get back to me. Persistence hasnt gotten me anywhere either. Ive networked my ass off with alums and have forwarded resumes to a few firms that way.
I had an interview a while ago with State Street, and have should have an interview coming up with a small hedge fund i worked for over this past winter break. What do you all think? Is this normal for sophomore year? My GPA is sky high and my school, while a non-target, is still a top school and no joke.
Any advice?
Internships are hard to get sophomore year for a non-target (I was in your shoes last year). You are doing all of the right things, but sometimes it takes some luck. Keep doing what you are doing (try some more local firms) and see what happens. I would also suggest that you talk to all of your professors (past and present) to see if they know of anyone that has a need for you. Keep making that net wider, that is all you can do at this point.
I did work at non-profit advocacy group last summer and will be at BB this summer. Your grades and networking will get you the interview, and your preparation for the interviews will get you the job. I wouldn't worry too much about your sophomore summer. At the very worst you can spin it off as "I wanted to try something else but realized that it wasn't for me and I wanted something that was more [insert quality here] like banking".
Sounds like it could be your resume. Maybe the way you worded your past experiences, maybe the layout, maybe the order of things... Perhaps upload it and let us see if thats where the problem lies.
Just focus on trying to get valuable experience, even if you have to work for free. It's tough to get a good sophmore internship without connections. Try reaching out to your school's alumni. Focus on setting yourself up for next year.
