Start at BB then eventually move to boutique later in career?
I have heard advice to begin one’s IB career at a BB (analyst, ASO) and eventually (ideally) move to an elite boutique as MD. Unclear to me the ideal shop type for VP and Director levels.
Can someone explain to me why this is the case? Or refute. Just trying to understand the best / ideal career trajectory for someone not planning an exit out to HF or PE and why.
I wouldn't say there is an "ideal" path other than maximizing comp. At the highest level, that maximization depends on your ability to win mandates and deliver fees. So as an MD, I would look for a platform that complements my skills and experience with resources to help me win and close. Lots of factors at play - sector creds, balance sheet or lack thereof etc. etc..
For me, the thinking is similar at the Director / VP level except instead of resources to win fees, it's path to MD.
