Successful pivot out of LMM M&A (London)

Been working at a LMM M&A shop in London for just over a year now and now planning to pivot to the MM/above. Got very good completed deal experience so I think the only thing “holding me back” from making the step up is lack of brand name and low EV on said deals (most are around 20-50m).

From here, which firms/HH should I target? Thinking the likes of RJ/HW/HL etc. but any colour would be appreciated.

Thanks! 🙏

To successfully pivot from a LMM M&A shop in London to MM or above, targeting firms with a stronger brand name and larger deal sizes is a solid strategy. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps and recommendations:

Firms to Target:

  1. Rothschild & Co (RJ) - Known for strong deal flow and a reputable name in the MM space.
  2. Houlihan Lokey (HL) - A top player in MM M&A with a strong presence in London.
  3. William Blair (WB) - A well-regarded MM firm with a focus on quality transactions.
  4. Lincoln International - Another strong MM player with a growing reputation in Europe.
  5. Lazard (London) - While primarily known for larger deals, they also handle MM transactions and offer excellent exit opportunities to PE.
  6. Jefferies - A strong MM player with a global presence and solid deal flow.

Headhunters to Engage:

For London-based roles, the following headhunters are highly recommended for private equity and MM investment banking transitions: - KEA Consultants - Walker Hamill - Blackwood Group - PER - Dartmouth Partners (Arkesden) - More focused on IB but still worth engaging.

Key Considerations:

  • Highlight Deal Experience: Emphasize your completed deal experience, even if the EV is on the lower side. Focus on the complexity, your role, and the outcomes of these deals.
  • Networking: Leverage your network to connect with professionals at your target firms. Attend industry events and reach out to alumni from your school or current firm.
  • Brand Positioning: Address the "lack of brand name" by showcasing your technical skills, deal experience, and ability to handle larger, more complex transactions.

By targeting these firms and working with the right headhunters, you can position yourself effectively for a move to MM or above. Good luck!
