Surgery as new analyst

Incoming analyst at a BB starting in July.

I recently learned that I will need to get double jaw (orthognathic) surgery and will also need to undergo ~12 months of pre-surgical orthodontics (looking to get Invisalign) to align and prepare teeth. Orthodontic appointments will be around every 6 weeks. After the actual jaw surgery, it looks like I will need 3-4 weeks to recover before coming back to work.

I was curious if anyone has had jaw surgery or otherwise major surgery while in banking that required that much time off and how you navigated it. I’m also concerned about how I will manage to schedule such frequent orthodontic appointments since it’s unlikely there’s weekend availability.

When would it be appropriate to disclose something like this to HR/my staffer? I’m worried that if I notify folks too early, it will affect my first-year performance review/bonus.

Surely they can’t discriminate you based upon this. I wouldn’t get specific as to what surgery you’re getting and just mention you have a medically necessary procedure that has to happen

Been through something similar for Sleep Apnea, needed DJS. It's a medical necessity and they can't discriminate against you. Should take a month WFH (first week off), communicate this with your manager and keep HR in the loop as well.

I would keep HR in the loop by just asking them what potential accommodations look like and mentioning it from an insurance perspective. That way your manager is in the loop and HR knows you reached out well ahead of time and shit.

The surgery can be tough, but def worth it. No more CPAP bs and breathe better. GL

I had DJS recently, was able to line it up perfectly so recovery landed when I was between jobs. The frequent appointments in the leadup to surgery definitely impacted my performance, doesn't matter much since I left but if you're going to go ahead with it make sure you're proactively in communication with people senior to you about when you expect to be OOO.

Jeez, I was worried about having to get 4 wisdom teeth pulled as an incoming analyst but this sounds brutal.

I would just advise you to notify them as soon as possible. If people have time to plan for your schedule then it is essentially a non issue, if not then it becomes a hassle to try and staff you; better to be up front with this kind of thing as I would have a hard time imagining that it would impact your bonus / review.

If anything, you showing strong performance while recovering through this procedure is going to shine your performance in a better light than it otherwise would without the procedure! Just communicate about it so there’s no surprises for your seniors
