Talking to IB Global Head
Hey Guys,
Have been networking pretty actively.
emailed a global co-head of IB at a BB.
got a reply. his EA set up a time for us to talk (CV also asked for review).
usually I am pretty good with such networking calls and often build a relationship with the people I talk to.
but this is a different ball game altogether. any advice?
any solid questions that can help me make a lasting impression.
have researched the guy a lot, he's a rainmaker. how can I use the info I know, to my advantage?
thanks.
Congrats- awesome opportunity. I"ve been able to cultivate a relationship with a SMD at one of the large IB/PE shops who went to my school, but honestly talking to these people is pretty easy. In my experience the most successful people tend to be nice, down-to-earth people (there may be some exceptions, but since he is willing to talk to you I can't imagine we should be an asshole) but be willing to talk about yourself (your background, interest in banking) and ask more general questions about himself (his career advice, skills that helped him succeed, his career path, business school, etc..) Chances are he will want to help you as much as possible (since he did get back to you) so he will probably talk a lot during the time- just try to soak up as much info as possible and treat it as a genuine learning opportunity. Also don't be afraid to follow up, ask to meet for coffee/visit the office, etc.. As long as you're polite, on-time, seem polished for a college student, and are genuine, you'll be surprised at what senior people will be willing to do for you. Good luck!
I cannot agree with this more. I've spoken with many group heads and they all were great calls. I treated it like any other call (obviously did a lot of research on them). Ask a lot about their careers and about the firms progression throughout their stint and where they see the firm going. You're in a good spot rn, just don't say anything questionable and you'll be fine. At the end of the day, just be you!
Totally agree with this. It's about treating them with respect and asking solid questions but take the opportunity to learn as much from him as possible and be as thankful as possible for him taking the time to speak with you.
At the end of the day, there are still a normal person (despite being widely successful) so you shouldn't be nervous, rather just take advantage of being able to pick someone's brain who has made it in the industry
Thanks for the extremely solid advice.
Some questions I prepped:- 1. Give him some context (my usual script) and ask him what more/ better I can do? 2. His trajectory why/how he went about building it. 3. His overview of the industry and where it's headed 4. his overview of the group he has been heading (in that particular order)
anything more/ anything to omit?
thanks again for the insights, man.
Yeah I think those are good. For question 1, I wouldn't frame it as how can I be better but more like, what advice would you give someone beginning a career in finance. When you talk about the industry, I would try to ask a bit more specific quesions too, just to demonstrate that you have read up on the industry and know the basic trends. Also would try to keep it conversational, my best calls have been where I'm activley listening and following up on things they've said, so don't worry about following the script. Never a bad idea to prep too many quesitons, as long as you're willing to deviate from the outline. I would start by asking him about his trajectory, and then going wherever the conversation takes you from there. You can interject questions and ask others after, but I think people tend to like talking about themselves so that's always been a natural opener for me.
The only IB Global Head that takes calls like this is Cowen and Citi's. No hiding that.
You MSing me cuz you know it's truehttps://media2.giphy.com/media/cObIzBCAkFxW60ORYj/giphy-downsized.gif" alt="Talking to IB Global Head" />
Maybe if you're a non target. Jamie Dimon, David Solomon, and Steve Schwarzman will pick up the phone if you're a student at a top school. You obviously wouldn't know.
Spoke with Bobby Tudor while recruiting in Houston, which was pretty cool.
OP here. The guy I am going to talk to is also HT, Texas Rainmaker.
Any specific questions I can ask, to be more engaging?
So Trauber?
