target strategies

with the economy as bad as it is, how wide of a net would you recommend casting these next few years? i have heard stories of people applying to nearly 100 places - is this realistic or necessary?

The amount of banks you apply to matters very little in comparison to the amount of networking you do. You could apply to 100 banks, but if you have not networked, you will have less of a chance at getting an offer than the guy that spent four years of college networking but only applied to a handful of banks.

so then what is "enough" networking and lots of people network, so what are the odds you will get one of the 10 or how many ever slots they have?

You have networked "enough" when you get an offer that you like.

And lots of people don't network; even if everyone does network, then all that means is that you need to start networking to at least get on par with everyone else. Quit worrying about your chances except to say that networking drastically increases your chances of getting an interview.
