The Higher Road - Volunteering

As a future new grad having a complete resume is ideal. Initially to give back to society but also to compliment work experience, student life involvement and good grades; I’ve looked into volunteering. A quick screen led me to the "Bankers without Borders" program that operates as an arm of the Grameen Foundation. Now I spoke to individual that went through the program and he mentioned that the experience of the volunteering-aspect was not as valuable as he thought it would be. Research and suggestions he had to improve the micro-finance environment will likely never reach the right people or get used. He said the experience of the trip was amazing. Other classmates believe that volunteering abroad is naive, in the sense that we can help and volunteer in our own backyard. We will probably have a greater contribution within our own city then if we pay to go overseas. Any thoughts or experiences you'd like to share?

Habitat for Humanity.

Was talked into my first build... now I try to do at least 2 a year. Great program. Awesome feeling to see a family truly in need with a place to call home. Get outside, use your hands, learn some craft skills, honest physical hard work... makes you appreciate some of the things we take as a given.

Watched a guy lose a thumb on a chop saw once... That was crazy!
